God loves babies and children! Did you know that? I guess most readers would say, “Yes, of course, I know that God loves children!” Most of you know Psalm 139 that tells us that God knit us together in our mother’s womb.
Satan, on the other hand, hates children! Have you ever considered that?
Some of you will, no doubt, be aware of such things. You may remember the Bible stories of the huge slaughter of babies in the days when Moses was born and then again when Jesus was a baby. There was on each of those occasions, the wrath of a wicked king that was being expressed in a malevolent, murderous manner towards the innocent, precious babes and small children, in their attempts to utterly destroy God’s plan of salvation. Quite horrific humanly speaking! But God preserved Moses and Jesus by His loving guidance to the parents of those children. And God will in our time, likewise, lead His obedient parents in how to protect their innocent little children.
Even though we live in an age of an increasing deluge of wickedness with its corresponding tsunami of murder of babies under the terminology of “abortion”! God is still on the throne of His kingdom. Are you part of His kingdom too? If so, you will surely love what He loves and hate what he hates. You will seek to know His will in all matters pertaining to the children that He puts into your care for a season.
Now let me tell you a story
Once upon a time (well, twenty-five years ago – not hundreds of years ago, I hasten to add!) in a place far, far away (well not if you live in England – I just refer to my overseas readers here), there lived a young lady who was an obedient servant of a Great King.
She lived happily with her master and their two (later to be three) precious children entrusted into her care by the great King (eventually she will live happily ever-after in His final heavenly Kingdom – oops, sorry I am jumping ahead of myself here!).
One day, as she thought to herself about the immensity of the task set before her, she bowed low in humility before the King, asking Him, “How shall I teach these babes of yours; what are your rules for their care and upbringing?”
And the King replied, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
She asked the King again about the nature of the people of His kingdom that He ruled over.
And He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of the King as a little child they will by no means enter it.”
She next questioned the King about the importance of what to allow their young, trusting minds to think upon and read about.
And the King said, “Whatever things are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—think on these things.”
She then dared to ask the great King what would happen to those who were disobedient to His kingdom rules, regarding the care and upbringing of the little children that He cared about.
And the King replied, “It would be better for them if a millstone were hung around their neck, and they were thrown into the sea, than that they should offend one of these little ones!”
And finally, she dared to ask about how to protect the children from the King’s enemies; how to recognise the difference between enemy agents and true agents of the King.
And He said to her, “I am The Truth.
The enemy is a murderer, and has been so from the beginning! He does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”
And then she said, “But my Lord and King, how shall I go about this great task?”
And the King replied, “These words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
The lady bowed in humble reverence, saying meekly, “Let it be to me and my children according to Your Word.”
She immediately took up her writing implements and wrote the following Psalm in honour of the task that the great King had thus bestowed upon her.

My Son
Oh, my son, my son; What would I not do for you?
I care so much, I love so much, My precious son.
God told me your name
Just days after you were formed.
A gift from God.
Prayed for and talked to even before you were born.
Your father cried the only tears I’ve seen him shed,
When you were born.
I’ve searched volumes and libraries
To seek knowledge in your upbringing.
I’ve carefully selected the most wholesome foods,
And the best clothing we could afford.
No harmful, frightening toys, books or TV for you.
God’s precious child,
Entrusted into our care for your childhood, growing years.
The joys and pains are many.
Your father and I will never erase from our minds
That look of hurt and anguish of your first discipline.
Nor will we forget the pleasure of your each and every development.
Your drawings and first writing, your speech and your dancing.
Your little hand in mine, so sweet, so vulnerable.
The innocence of a child entrusted into our care.
The task of guiding you so great, so awesome,
Yet God is my strength and my guide.
I will ask Him for wisdom.
I will seek Him because He cares and will help me to care for you.
So, shall I now place you, my son, in the care and company of strangers?
Shall I relinquish my task to others?
Shall I stand by and risk all my protective, nurturing care being eroded,
By those who cannot care as I?
My heart cries out a deep, resounding, “No”!
It says stand by your son, and bring him up in the instruction of the Lord.
Nurture him with love and wise discipline.
Be there to kiss a hurt knee, to cuddle away his tears, to pray without ceasing.
And to share the joy of learning together.
What journey of life is this?
One so different that I am honestly scared.
But I know that God is my rock,
And together with Him we shall stand and overcome ‘till the end.
When with the angels of heaven, we shall proclaim for ever,
“The holiness of our God,
Who was, and is, and is to come.”
Who saved me from a life of sin and death,
To one of purpose and depth.
My son, if this is all I teach you,
Then I assure you it is worth more than a thousand GCSE’s, BSc’s or MSc’s!
So “Listen my son to your father’s instruction,
And do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
They will be a garland to grace your head And a chain to adorn your neck.”
And may you grow in the knowledge and love of God,
So that joy and peace will overflow my heart,
My son. My firstborn son.

In Conclusion
I was initially exceedingly scared when I knew that the Lord wanted me to teach my own children and not send them to school, like everyone else around me was doing. My heart used to nearly leap out of my body with the fear at what I was about to undertake and 
what people’s reactions might be to it. I want to emphasise also, to my overseas readers, that Home Education was very rare in my country of England at that time. So it was a truly radical departure from the norm of the people around me. Yet it was certainly a worthwhile venture. And the bottom line for me was that I knew that it was the Lord’s will for me and my family at that time.
In the end, I managed to teach them successfully for a period of about fourteen years at home, but then I used the school system after that point, when my life fell apart through divorce.
Let me finally exhort you, in these days of great and increasing wickedness, as the battle between the Kingdom of God versus the kingdoms of this world, (of the devil, or Satan) grow more intense, to bow in humble submission, to the almighty Lord of Lords and King of Kings. Let me encourage you, that the Lord God is not only able to lead and direct your path, but that He will assist you and give you the courage you lack. He surely cares for you and your little ones.
“Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.” 1 Peter 5:6-10

Just lovely! I promised my daughter that I would home school her little ones. It scares me but it gives me a daily prayer opportunity. She has no little one yet, so I have a while to get my education for this next step in our journey.

The call to home school was a big surprise for me, but it is such a blessing to cuddle my kids and not watch the hardness that comes from sending them to school. It is a daily struggle because of my illness, but God must be working through it anyway because they are doing very well and testing well. I love your writing voice and all of the scriptures you quoted here.

Like you, I used to love the lazy, cuddlesome mornings that I used to spend with my sons when they were little. I loved that fact that we weren’t always having to rush each other out of the door to get to a place on time.
When my sons went to school, later in their lives, they were tested and put in the top set or group, and all managed good grades in their final exams. You can end up getting worrisome about that kind of thing when you are their teacher. My eldest, as an adult, now reflects back on his young life and says that being kept away from schools made him brighter. That was nice comment to get from him.

My daughter home schools. She has four children. Two have already graduated high school, another will graduate this coming May. She has one more that will graduate in a couple of years. They all love being home schooled. I’ve been to the home school graduations (really beautiful) and the students exhibit excellent accomplishments and future goals. Thanks for writing about this topic. Good post.

Hi Cathy, Thanks for your input. Its good to hear of other people’s positive experiences. It’s certainly not the easy option but it can be very rewarding. The bottom line for me was an absolute knowing that it was the Lord who led me to follow that path. I lived at that time, amongst people mainly of another religion; as well as those with no religion. So my precious little 4 year old children would have been exposed, at too young an age, with conflicting world views.

My grandchildren have all been home schooled according to a program titled Classical Conversations. This has given them not only a solid Biblical and moral foundation but also a classical one: they have studied Shakespeare in depth; algebra, geometry, trig; philosophers like Aristotle and Plato, etc. they participate in debates with other groups. Most of all they learn consideration for each other and reverence for their God. There is no other place that equals this kind of education. Barbara
